A Day at The Mary Rose Museum: A Journey Through Time
Recently, our Year 2 and Year 4 pupils had an unforgettable learning experience together at The Mary Rose Museum, located in the historic Portsmouth Historic Dockyard. From the moment the pupils entered, they were transported back in time—greeted by a hologram of none other than King Henry VIII himself! The experience set the tone for what turned out to be an incredibly immersive day.
The Mary Rose
Their adventure began with a thrilling 4D cinema presentation that allowed us to relive the dramatic raising of the Mary Rose from the sea bed. It was awe-inspiring to watch the ancient ship, once lost to the depths of the ocean, emerge from the waters—giving us a true sense of the historical magnitude of the event.
Inside the museum, the children were able to explore the vast collection of over 19,000 artefacts. What made this experience even more remarkable was the opportunity to handle some of the items ourselves and, in some cases, even smell them! It added a personal touch that brought us closer to the past.
The highlight of the day was the workshop with Garth, the Lead Education Officer. He guided us through an insightful exploration of the lives of the sailors and officers who served on the Mary Rose. The children examined their social hierarchy, daily lives, and the challenges they faced—giving us a deeper understanding of the people behind the ship.
The Mary Rose Museum proved to be a fascinating and interactive learning destination, blending history, technology, and hands-on exploration to create a memorable experience for all.
