I enjoyed preparing this day for the Year 7 group as it gave me an opportunity to reflect back on my own life and look at the handful of people who I would be happy to run through a brick wall for. I analysed what qualities did they have that made them so special in their positions as leaders?

 

Year 7 started independently with a similar exercise and then, working collaboratively, they narrowed down the keywords and phrases they had chosen about a strong leader, leaving them with a small collection of key attributes. With those in mind, we headed into the woods where the children worked in groups to create an obstacle course for some of the Year 3 children. Alongside this task, Year 7 spent time in the swimming pool tackling three challenges that tested some of their leadership and looked at ways we all could be better at it. After lunch, our budding Year 3s arrived and it was lovely to see the interactions between the older and younger children. The older ones guided them through the course and despite getting very muddy (as all good obstacle courses should), the Year 3 children (and massively importantly too the Year 7s) had great smiles on their faces.

 

As a cohort that will continue to be the figureheads at the top of the school for the next number of years, I hope important lessons were learnt and they realise that they ALL can be leaders, irrespective of whether they wear an official captain’s armband or badge on their blazer. It starts with being kind, a popular choice of word as to the number one important attribute of the leaders in our lives. Merci beaucoup to Mr Boyington for his help in running the day.
