An Inspiring Organ Masterclass at St. Mary’s Church, Fordingbridge

This morning, our music pupils were treated to a truly special experience—an Organ Masterclass at the beautiful St. Mary’s Church in Fordingbridge. The grand organ in the church, with its rich history and intricate design, provided the perfect setting for a hands-on exploration of one of the most majestic instruments in the world of music.

Under the expert guidance of Hazel Ricketts, the Director of Music, our students had the rare opportunity to dive into the many facets of organ playing. Hazel’s passion for the instrument and her vast knowledge brought the class to life. She introduced the children to the various elements that make the organ unique—from its incredible array of sounds to the intricate system of stops, and the importance of the foot pedals.

One of the highlights of the session was learning how the organ produces sound in a way that’s so distinct from a piano. The students were fascinated to discover how the air flows through pipes and how each stop adjusts the sound, allowing for a vast range of tones. They also had the chance to explore the mechanics of the instrument firsthand—an experience that truly brought the music to life in a way that no textbook ever could.

What made this morning even more special was the opportunity for the students to interact with the organ up close. Hazel’s enthusiastic teaching style, combined with her vast knowledge of the organ, meant that every question was answered and every curiosity satisfied. It was clear that the children were inspired and engaged throughout the entire session.

We can’t thank Hazel enough for her amazing contribution and for sharing her expertise in such a fun, accessible way. Her enthusiasm for music was infectious, and we’re grateful for the chance to learn from one of the best.

The entire group left the session with a deeper understanding of the organ and a greater appreciation for the craftsmanship and artistry involved in playing it. For many, this will surely be a memorable experience that sparks a lifelong interest in the instrument.

A huge thank you to Hazel and St. Mary’s Church for hosting us. We look forward to more musical adventures in the future!
