Jon Kabat-Zinn is the professor emeritus of medicine and the creator of the Stress Reduction Clinic at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He was a student of Zen Buddism and introduced the concept of mindfulness based on his experiences. His teachings have drifted across the pond and mindfulness is now considered to be recognised as a way of reducing stress, anxiety, pain and illness.
We were very fortunate to have a visit from Captain Pat Burgess MBE from the Army who was recently recognised in the New Year’s honour list for his work introducing mindfulness techniques to children and adults throughout the country. With exams and scholarships coming up, it was timely for our Year 7 and 8 children to participate in a workshop where Captain Burgess introduced them to ways to reduce stress, improve sleep and be in the ‘Now’. He encouraged children to take control of their mind and thoughts, to live in the ‘Now’ ‘where your mind and your body are in the same place, at the same time with the same focus’.
